Festivals and Colours

India is a land of festivals. Festivals are joyful occasions in India that are celebrated with a lot of flamboyance and presence of the loved ones. Festivals add and enrich the essential colours to life. Every festival has a story, tale and deep significance behind it. The significance is kept alive and celebrated throughout the country and life with a lot of joy, cheer and elation bundled together to form special occasions called festivals.

Diwali is a festival of lights. The colour yellow rules Diwali as the diyas light up every nook and corner. These lights are not just lights per say, they symbolize brightness and darkness being done away with. These lights are deeply connected to fresh beginnings, colours of brightness and lit up joys.

Eid is another festival marked by celebration of food and delicacies. Eid in Arabic means ‘breaking the fast’. The colour associated with the celebration of being alive and being together in fasting as well as celebrating the breaking of this fast is white. The peace and purity that engulf our being after the period of pious fasting is symbolically represented by the colour white.

Holi is one of the other main festivals in the country and is the festival of colours. Holi is a spring festival that marks the ending of one season (winter) and beginning of another (spring). All the colours bright and light, dark and subtle are associated with Holi. The colourful festival adds a sense of playfulness and friendship in everyone’s life.

Not just the ones mentioned, but there are thousands of other festivals that India celebrates every year. These festivals add to the essence of life. Dulux spells and believes in colours that life is made of. Dulux’s message- ‘Apne rang chalakne do’ is what the essence of life is, really. Enjoy celebrations with the Dulux spirit of splashing colours of one’s personality around and spreading the message of life of colours that lights up the lives of us and our loved ones!

Bossy Brown

Is bossy brown your favourite colour? Wondering how to pitch in your colour into your décor to give that special feel to the room décor?

Brown is a nice colour to play with. Brown is a very natural colour and has a down-to-earth appeal. Symbolically, brown stimulates appetite and is found in the nature very extensively. Brown has an appeal to it that gives it all a wholesome and earthy feel.

Since, the colour brown falls into the category of subtle colours, it is very easy to fuse it with various other colours. Cream, taupe, tan, beige etc. are colours that are brown family colours and have a rich and bright appeal to them.

Do not be afraid to add your favourite bossy brown to the décor of your room. Play around with shades of the brown; team them up with mellow yellow, rusty orange, deep purple, green gray, orange-red to create a blend of beautiful colours.

Be careful of the ways in which you bring all these colours together. The shades of pastel browns and bossy browns help in giving your space a totally Indian as well as western look if dashes of burgundy, rusty orange colours etc. are thrown in cleverly.

Light coloured couches gel well with rich brown walls. Shawls and sofa covers in dark browns look beautiful in case your sofa is of cream or white colour. Artistic lampshades with traditional mirror work, colourful Indian carpets, Madhubani paintings in well-coordinated colours look amazing to lend an Indian air to the décor. In case one wishes for a contemporary look for one’s room, having colourful artwork complimented by base colour couches look absolutely stunning!

Brainstorm a little, buy rich looking browns for your room and give it a nice makeover. It is definitely possible to bring in your favourite bossy brown in your room by either painting your walls in bossy brown colour offered by Dulux or accessorizing your home in bossy brown blended well with other colours.

What to do with white themed walls?

Home reflects homeowner’s personality, character and taste. Wall colour, furniture, wall art etc- everything speaks about the house’s inhabitants. Home décor is also a way/medium to express oneself.

People use different colour for painting their walls, some use texture paints while some use plain simple paints and colours for their walls. Even when it comes to furniture, some people opt for dramatic and heavy furniture which looks antique and classic, while some go in for trendy and modern furniture. Curtain type, cushion type, side tables are all very minute things but are available in many options.

Wall colour is important for choosing furniture. Plain colours on walls generally make the room look very plain. But what if one has white walls and one doesn’t really have enough cash to get it repainted? What steps can one take to make sure the white-themed walls and the furniture one chooses gel with each other to create an effective décor. Light shaded furniture looks nice with white walls in a room.

You can opt for red and black furniture to create a play of modern appeal and blend in the décor. A black couch with cushions and armrests would look stunning and lend your room a modern character. Add in black frames, lamps, coffee tables and use red toned cushions and table covers to balance the play of colours in the room.

One can either choose one of the brighter and innovative colour solutions from paints in shade cards as offered by Dulux or one can use simple techniques to add dashes of other colours with cushions, curtains and table top accessories can be easily added to drive away the focus from the bland wall and also maintain the balance of colours.

What not to do in your living room!

There are innumerous decoration ideas to have a perfect living room design. But have you ever wondered as to what one should avoid doing when it comes to living room design.

Firstly, make sure you choose a wall paint colour for your living room which is pleasant and warm. Do not opt for a colour for your living room walls which is drab, grey and dark. Such colours spread negativity and affect your mood in a downhill way.

Secondly, do not overdo with the family photographs in your living room. Avoid putting all the cute pictures onto the walls as they might look over the top. Some pictures look sweet only in the albums while they look overbearing and crowding if they are put up all at once.

Thirdly, make sure that you do not overdo the exotic element in your living room design. Modern and contemporary décor, no doubt is a rage these days but if your living room looks like a space shuttle and a museum of every thing trendy available in the market, then your living room may look unwelcoming and chaotic instead of looking nice and classy. Just throw in dashes of modern fabrics around the furnishings, put up trendy curtains and furniture rather than over expressing the theme.

Fourthly, avoid over decorating your room and installing too many counters, otherwise you may make your room look like a bar or a pub.

Following the above few points, paying attention to the furnishings, making sure of painting your living room in Dulux colour shades can really help you to get the best living room design.

Dress up your dressing room

Dressing rooms are usually attached closed areas around the bathrooms. The main purpose of having a dressing room in one’s house is to be able to get dressed without any kind of hurry. Dressing rooms earlier were not as common as they are now. The reason behind this changing trend is the fact that people now have become more aligned towards vanity and beauty. People especially spend time on design ideas for their dressing rooms now as it is the only part of the house where one can be his or her own self.

People generally go in for separate panels for all their items like clothes, accessories, shoes etc. The different storage spaces are blended in terms of the room décor. Some of the popular furnishing items that are required to be kept in dressing rooms are dressing table, wardrobe spaces, shoe rack and some shelves to stock in essential stuff. One can pick classiest and shiniest of wood for the cabinets to be installed in the dressing room area as the area is usually small and the wood furnishings would fit in the budget even if one chooses to go for a high quality and expensive kind of wood. Some of the varieties of woods that one can choose from are cherry, oak, teak, mahogany and pine.

Furthermore, to add on to the look of the wood, Dulux offered wood paints can be used. Dulux wood paints help one to take care of one’s wood furnishing and lend the wooden furnishings a longer life.

Wrought iron dressing table and aluminum almirahs are also commonly used. One can pick from the trendiest of options for furnishings in the market. Dulux offers metal paints too, to help you care for your metal furnishings in the long run.

Dressing room is just like any other room but the challenge lies for you, in experimenting with the design ideas. You can go for unique finishes and cuts in your furnishing. Instead of your routine cabinets and traditional storage spaces; choose for angular design storage with funky colours, door handles and panels. Dressing tables are also available in several designs that one can match up according to one’s design ideas and one’s taste. Opt for stylish lights to accentuate the look of your dressing room but make sure that the functionality part of the lights does not get left out.

Undercoats boost the paint quality

Getting a perfect wall finish requires expertise of sorts. Many people skip the step of applying undercoats on a while repainting house walls. As a result, the final finish is uneven and blotchy. Even the contractors may not give you correct advice to go for undercoats if your budget is constrained. But these undercoats prove a good investment in the long run because the paint on your walls will stay fresh and intact for a long time and wont’ chip off easily.

Products like wall putty, acrylic primer, cement primer (water based or solvent based) are undercoats that give good adhesion to colour among other things. For eg, acrylic water based putty is used for patching up cracks, blemishes and holes on masonry surface. It is specially formulated for levelling of minor surface irregularities up to 3-4mm. However, it is recommended for internal application only. If your wall is affected by mould, we suggest you to treat it with 1 per cent Surface Treatment Chemical (STC) before applying any undercoat. After it dries off, apply putty using trowel, putty knife and leveller.

Primer, on the other hand, is used on surfaces which are fairly even. If there are only hairline cracks on the wall, ready to use wall fillers can be used. The purpose of primer is to basically give better adhesion to the paint on the surface. Correct application of primer ensures better quality and durability of finish coat. It is applied using a brush. Thus these undercoats can do wonder to the final finish of the wall. If the adhesion of the topcoat is good, then paint won’t chip off easily and your wall can look good for a longer period of time.

You can accessorize your home with colourful furnishing, wall paintings, curtains, vases, cushions, pillows, sofas etc. instead of being fearful of committing faux pas with colours; you can add small amounts of colours into your home décor to balance out colours.

You can balance colour in your home by using a lot of white and tone down the vibrant colours. You can use neutral area rug, neutral glasses and vases etc. to avoid getting overwhelmed with colours.

You can test colour of your walls first by painting a small patch instead of painting the whole room and then regretting it. You can be comfortable with your colour choice for your walls and then paint your whole house. This will take away the fear of committing a mistake with colours. Adding colours in your home brings a new life and a new energy to your home. Colours uplift your mood and fill your mind with vibrant thoughts.

RECOGNISING COLOURS

Colours are really important part of our lives. They are into our expressions, thoughts, feelings and our soul. We are taught to recognize colours right from childhood. For us, each colour has a story associated with it. Each colour affects us in a different way. Some colours tranquilize us, some make us feel cringed and some make us gloomy! But definitely we are attracted to all the colours. Colours give life to paintings, drawings, photographs and television. If everything were in black and white there wouldn’t be much to characterize and enjoy what we see.

Even as children we always had fun playing with colours. There are a lot of ways in which colours are taught to children. You can teach your children colours through many fun ways and bring colours into their lives. Colours can be taught using flash cards. Flash cards can contain colourful pictures of things surrounding us.

You can even teach your kids, colours, through food. Food come in a variety of different colours. Describing colours in food is a very creative activity that you can do with your children and make them learn the colours that are in their daily lives!
Give your children a giant canvas or a chart and give them some colours to splash across it. The child can imprint his/her handprints on the paper and make a nice painting out of it. Play with your child and call out the colours you see in the handprints. Make it a fun activity!

You can also take your child outside and as you pass trees, stones, grasses and cars, identify the colours. You can point out something of a different colour that you see and make a game out of it.

Have fun with colours. Bring them into your life. Colours are a part of our lives and recognizing this fact adds creativity and positivity! Get going and have some fun with colours and your kids!!! Life is precious. Live it. colour it.

If you like contemporary décor, you can go in for tiles to go with your entire décor. Design and texture of your tiles should reflect your taste, personality and compliment entire decor of your home.

Size is another factor to be kept in mind while picking a tile for your home. A 12 by 12 inch tile would be good for larger spaces like drawing room etc. Entryways, bathrooms need smaller tiles for a better look!

Tile grade is another very important thing to take care of, as you need to choose tiles as per the area that it is to be used for. Bathrooms, yards, hallways need durable tiles. Pricing of tiles is another important factor that determines the look of your home.
