Jazz up your living space

Living room décor speaks a lot about you and your personality. Living room is an area that is exposed first and foremost to whoever comes to visit us. Therefore, it important for a living room to look bright and well maintained. Not only the guests, living room also is an area where one lounges most of the time which makes it a space where one spends leisure time after a busy day.

It is important to have a creative room décor for a living room to boost energy of the whole house. The most important thing in a living room is the seating arrangement. Make sure that your living room has a comfortable and cushiony couch which gives you space enough to relax alone and also when guests and friends come to visit you.

It is also important to throw in a dash of bright as well as subtle colours into your living room. A room décor is successful only when the colours- bright and subtle are pitched in together, instead of over doing one single colour. Having a bright texture wall in your room complimented with single colour walls and subtle coloured couches look great and beautiful. Colourful pillows and rugs are another great way to bring in colours to your room décor. Using colourful and bright accessories like flower vases, paintings, mirrors with exquisite frames help in adding freshness and brightness to the décor. Hanging an all black and white painting onto a texture wall with bright colours is another good way to balance different shades of colours. Bright curtains and table covers also help in giving the room a well maintained look! Enjoy decorating your space.

Undercoats boost the paint quality

Getting a perfect wall finish requires expertise of sorts. Many people skip the step of applying undercoats on a while repainting house walls. As a result, the final finish is uneven and blotchy. Even the contractors may not give you correct advice to go for undercoats if your budget is constrained. But these undercoats prove a good investment in the long run because the paint on your walls will stay fresh and intact for a long time and wont’ chip off easily.

Products like wall putty, acrylic primer, cement primer (water based or solvent based) are undercoats that give good adhesion to colour among other things. For eg, acrylic water based putty is used for patching up cracks, blemishes and holes on masonry surface. It is specially formulated for levelling of minor surface irregularities up to 3-4mm. However, it is recommended for internal application only. If your wall is affected by mould, we suggest you to treat it with 1 per cent Surface Treatment Chemical (STC) before applying any undercoat. After it dries off, apply putty using trowel, putty knife and leveller.

Primer, on the other hand, is used on surfaces which are fairly even. If there are only hairline cracks on the wall, ready to use wall fillers can be used. The purpose of primer is to basically give better adhesion to the paint on the surface. Correct application of primer ensures better quality and durability of finish coat. It is applied using a brush. Thus these undercoats can do wonder to the final finish of the wall. If the adhesion of the topcoat is good, then paint won’t chip off easily and your wall can look good for a longer period of time.

The huge scope for decorative paint market in India

Colours have a rejuvenating effect on our mind, body and soul. A colourful and lit up room can pep our mood while darkly lit room with dull shades can bring back all the gloomy blues. People nowadays understand the concept of a colouring the homes in specific shades and experimenting with the space. However, in India there is a lot of scope for the paint market to evolve and come of age.

In India, at an average only 0.6 kg of paint is used per household annually whereas in countries like China, it is 1.6 kg and in western countries, it is as huge as 22 kg. Of the paint purchased, the major component is formed by decorative paints. Decorative paints refer to the paints used in exterior walls, rooms, other interior spaces, wood finishes and ancillary products such as primers and putties. Paint purchased for this purpose makes around 75 per cent of the total paint market in India.

The decorative paint market is price sensitive. Its demand increases during the festive season (September to December) as compared to the other months. Also, a paint company earns better margin in this segment as compared to industrial paints, which primarily deals with automotive coatings, powder coatings and protective coatings. However, this segment is far more technologically more intensive than the decorative paint segment. Nevertheless, it is speculated that paints for home decor will witness a boom in sales in the coming few years as compared to their technological paint counterpart because of the increasing government incentives to the housing sector. And in this change, Dulux is at the helm of the affairs, striving to bring the best solutions in the paint industry to its consumers!
