Your room speaks volumes about your personality

Our home décor speaks a lot about us. With just one look at our room décor, it is possible to know a lot about our tastes, our nature, our personality and our temperament. Wondering how is it possible? It is. Use of certain colours in a room, with certain kinds of furniture and certain kinds of accessories tell about the person who inhabits in the room.

Let’s see some examples of the above said-

Source - Fropki
Here’s a well furnished room which indeed looks beautiful and inviting at the first sight. The best things about this room include the subtle colour of the walls, the large windows and plants! It is evident from the room’s décor that a person living in the room is someone who likes to play it safe in life and does not experiment too much. The room’s décor is close to perfect and seems universally appealing as it does not tread towards any drama or any kind of loud decoration. The blend of sober wall colours with the freshness brought in by the plants and the windows looks peaceful and induces calmness. The person who would have a room like this one would surely be someone who values comfort along with finer aesthetics as well as the selective calmness of the nature brought home by a glimpse through the windows and placement of the trees at corners.

This room clearly has a lot of pink and a lot of coordination. The room has an absolute feminine air to it owing to the colour choice. It is easy to look at this room and be able to tell that it’s a girl’s room. The room has pink all around and definitely hints at the eccentricity of the one who inhabits here. The room is thematic in its colour coordination and décor. A décor like this would be a choice of someone who spends a lot of time in the room and is young. It is because such a décor would appeal to someone who is in awe of the colour and is ready for the overwhelming shock value that the décor in one single dominant colour might bring as one enters after a long day! A middle aged person or a working person would not like a décor which is so colour consuming and bright. Having said that, the room décor can be applauded for it’s edgy décor which includes shades of pink and well-cut furnishing!

Source - Defuturedesign
This room seemingly looks like it is decorated by a man and is inhabited by the same. The room is beautiful is dramatic and masculine. The animal skin bed cover and the unique design behind the bed are exquisite and sharp. The room belongs to a person who does not fear going bold and sharp in his choices. Not everyone would like to live in such a room as the room has a definite character and an air that is bold and excitingly dramatic. Right from the bed cover to the wall art to the metallic table with coffee maker to the solitary piece of art resting inside the wall next to the bed are some of the factors that speak volumes about the fearless and confident nature of the person inhabiting in here. The chest and the plant in the room add to the comfort and practical aspect of the personality of the room and the owner of the room!

Source - Fropki
The picture is of a room that’s extremely fancy and is very elaborate. Though the room looks nice, the décor of the room is extremely expensive and lavish. It is evident from the décor of this room that the owner of this room is someone who prefers to be flamboyant and lavish in his/her choice. The room has vintage furnishing and is complicated in tastes. It does present a picture looking at the room done up this way but it is a décor that demands time for its maintenance. The person living in this room is a definite vintage art lover and a carving fan. The elaborate bed, the curvy flooring style, the artistic lamps, the huge fashioned mirrors in the room speak in favour of the person’s artistic and expressive side of the personality.

Source - Rental Decorating
This room is simply marvelous. It is a room that’s not only classy but is contemporary. The person to be using this room would definitely be someone who has a fine understanding of colours, their effect on oneself and their impact when put together in one space. The room has an air of practicality, confidence and sobriety along with class which infact must be true of the taste and personality of the person living in it. The dark wood furniture (comfortable bed stand, tables, chest with drawers for storage, mirror) looks fabulous against the sober, neutral and calm walls. Ample lighting, a spare seating aside that too in neutral colour with a red throw, the carpet on the floor, the plant peeping from the corner and the bright curtains make it an exquisite and very tastefully done space. The person inhabiting this space is definitely someone who is tasteful, peaceful, confident who knows the balance between aesthetics and comfort.

What does your décor say about you? Let your home décor speak of you!

PAINT IT MAROON

Do you like to go bold with colours? Are shades of red family… your favourite? Do you ever wonder about going wrong with the bold hues and overdoing colours in your home? There are definitely ways in which you can balance out even the boldest of colours by correctly fusing in the furnishing with the bold colours on the walls.

In this picture, one wall has been painted in deep maroon and the rest of walls are white. Combination of maroon and white is doing the trick here when it comes to balancing a bright and a light colour. The side table and centre table used are in dark wood which is complimenting the dark wall of the room. The tables used are low and have drawers which are more spacious as well look classy.

To even out the dark tone in the room, cream furry rug has been used to add in the light shade in the room. Also, the cream sofa is the major element which is taking away the focus from the dark coloured wall and breaking even the shades in the room from getting monotonously dark.

The maroon cushions are supporting the sofa and making it fuse with the wall and the wood flooring in the room. The wood flooring looks judiciously chosen to support the wall colour. The white window panes look fabulous with the whole décor.

The creatively displaced candle is placed at a corner, however, it definitely is adding onto the room’s style. Candle peaking in from apple shaped case is a very distinct touch that the room is adorning. The vase standing at the floor near the sofa is at a solitary position decorating the room, but it definitely is connecting the room décor with an element of base and simple style!

Paint with primer using popular shades

The first concern that strikes while deciding to repaint the house is – Which Colour? With colours now being generated with the help of computer, there are a plethora of shades of one single colour. The more the colours, the more the confusion. When faced with this dilemma, most people go for some tried and tested popular paint colours.

Good ol’ white tops the list. It is a versatile colour and people use different shades of it on walls. It is a soothing colour and suits all personality types. White on four walls and deep blue colour of the ceiling gives a serene look to the room. Similarly, you can keep two or three walls of white shade and go for a contrasting colour on the remaining walls. After white, yellow is the colour of masses for doing the living room. Some people prefer baby pink too but guys might not like it in particular!

Other popular paint colours include grey and blue. However times are changing and so are the trends. People are experimenting with different colours and looks for their houses.

To get the best final result, always paint with primer. The primer is an adhesive which sticks to a surface to be painted and prepares it to receive the colour more efficiently. It also imparts durability and gives smooth finish. Applying primer becomes essential when the surface to be painted is porous (like concrete, drywall, wood ect.) or is not water resistant. Primering also protect the wall from moulds.

Primers come in different colours. When you are going for a lighter shade of the wall, use a light coloured primer. However, if the shade is a deep colour, then selecting a primer tinted of the similar colour will reduce the number of coats of paint required to apply on the wall. So get set to paint!

After all, different folks different strokes!

Living Room Design and Wall Design

Do you wish to change the look of your room? Are you bored of the plain solid coloured walls? Don’t worry, the paint industry can provide you with a plenty of wall design options. From murals, to wall stencils, faux finishes to colourful designs- there are numerous choices to pick from.

A wall design must be selected according to the dimensions and geometry of the room and personality of the inmates. First of all, let’s check out styles for living room design. A living room entertains all sorts of guests and people in a family. So the wall design should neither be too feminine (flowers, veins) nor too masculine (granite design or geometric). Ideally, one should go for a combination of neutral colours and wall stencils. Paisley print on a solid base, bubbles or polka dots, tree and branches, borders and strips add character to walls, while grisaille murals look elegant of big wall surface. The base colour and position of the design can be customized according to the placement of furniture in the room.

Also, type of furniture and its shade should be considered while going for a living room design. For example, if sofa set, centre table, chair and racks in the room have pointed edges then a somber colour with floral wall print will harmonize the feel of sharp edges. Conversely, if the furniture is rounded or has soft edges, then strong colour and geometrical wall design will look good. Now for the shade — conventionally, people use shades of similar colours on the wall, but sometimes contrasts give a rich and dramatic effect. However, avoid using contrasts of two strong colours. Keep one colour dull while the other bright while going for contrasting designs.

For the rest, follow your heart and you will never go wrong!

Have a Colourful Life!

Neutral shades are magical. There are all kinds of colours for different seasons, for occasions and for different rooms and spaces of my house!

Grey is a great neutral shade. It works well in all occasions, moods and places. For example, you can always choose to wear grey to add warmth to your look in winter season or formal occasions. For walls, grey is not always a good choice as grey walls may pull your mood and spirit down! Though, one can use grey rugs and quilts to add that touch of warmth by combining the grey with some other colours to avoid totally blanking out the décor of the room.

Black is a powerful colour and is an evergreen colour. However, black is not a colour for walls. You can add black bean bags or couches to fuse the colour into your décor and make your space look sheek and contemporary!

White and cream are beautiful colours for walls of your home. They add the feel of instant serenity to your space. These colours never go out of fashion and are always the first choice for making your house look spacious, classy, clean and pure.

Navy is a very formal and very subdued colour. You can’t go wrong with some colours and navy is one such colour! However, if your considering dressing up in all navy, make sure you do not over do it and ensure that you break the monotony of the shade by wearing mufflers, belts etc. Incase of walls, team the navy colour with other neutral shades and try adding silver accessories with navy colour around your décor to create a rich and elegant look for your home!

Camel colour is another colour that never goes out fashion. You can team it with bright maroons, oranges etc to bring the traditional factor to your home. Wearing camel colour is not such a great idea, but, you can bring in the colour into your life through your walls and your home décor!

Combine, create, contrast colours and add colours to your life through your wardrobe, walls, décor, accessories etc. Have a colourful life!

MAINTAINING CURTAINS

Curtains can really add or take away visual appeal of any room. Curtains are used for protection against weather and to ensure privacy in your home.

Choose a thick fabric for curtains to make sure that excessive sun rays do not bother you. Thick curtains can help you make sure that your home is protected against extreme weather. Also, thicker fabrics are more durable. However, thicker fabrics may be tough to wash. These can be dry cleaned though. There are a wide variety of designs, colours and patterns available in case of thicker curtains too, to pick from. Lighter fabrics are used for aesthetic purpose more than for functional purpose.

Since, curtains are hung against windows, they are bound to catch dirt and may even suffer discolouration due to exposure to heat. The dirt and dust around the house and even from the outside gets accumulated and make the curtains dirty. Due to exposure from the outside, curtains catch dust and dirt; therefore, they need to be maintained against the dirt.

Cleaning your curtains regularly is the key to beautiful rooms. Generally people wash curtains in the washing machine. However, too much detergent and wrong kind of washing powder may take away the colour and shine of your curtains, making them look old and damaged. In order to protect curtains, you can also use dusters and even vacuum cleaner. Steam cleaners are also available to protect and maintain curtains. Maintaining curtains is as important as choosing and hanging them. No matter how pretty your curtains are; if you do not clean them properly and do not maintain them well, your room is not going to look pretty.

COLOUR MEDITATION

In city life there is never a moment when you can shed off all the tension and let your hair down completely! Right from the morning, when we get up we rush to get dressed, get ready and be on our way in time to reach our work places, schools, colleges etc. for homemakers and other people who stay at home its all about finishing chores at home, while, the people who go out to work or study are the ones who are absolutely on the go right from dawn! The roads are full of noise, chatter, honking that surrounds us. Amidst all that hustle and bustle there are tempers flaring, people shouting, shrieking due to traffic and all the stress that is a part and parcel of city life.

Amidst the crazy hectic life of city, take time off and meditate. Concentrate on the being of yourself. Think inwardly and just relax breathing deeply. Life’s never going to give you time. It will always be about chasing, reaching, achieving and going forward! It is you who will need to calm down, choose your own pace, take your own time and love yourself.

When you’re in stress, when you feel strained, emotionally tired, tensed and drained… just close your eyes and feel/ imagine that you are taking a ‘light shower’. Imagine that light enveloping and swirling around you, penetrating your whole body! Light has vibrations, it gives you vitality, vigour and gives you a new energy to refresh and recharge. When you imagine light showers on you, you immediately are giving way to a new life and a new energy which will help you distress and feel good about yourself.

Try to just sit and relax, imagine a ball of golden light above your head. Imagine that the golden ball of light is slowly descending on your head and is slowly entering into your body. While you imagine light entering into you, you tend to relax your nerves, feel the colour vibrations. Every colour in the spectrum of light has its own vibrations and when you meditate, thus, with colours you are filling your being with vibrations that revitalize, rejuvenate and recharge you! You can repeat this activity of imagining balls of different colours until it completely relaxes you. Every individual has a colour that has a profound and special effect on him/her and causes a certain emotional stimulation etc. Due to repeated practice of this exercise, one is able to understand one’s balance between physical, emotional or mental state. Then you can go ahead with colour meditation using that colour. The more you practice the better the effect on your overall health is!

COLOURS AND CHILD PSYCHOLOGY

Colours affect our lives in a big way. Colours have a relation to child psychology. Children love all colours and are very responsive towards colours. The first thing that children respond towards while learning and growing up is colours. Little children are always attracted to bright colours. Colour preferences are formed and keep changing amongst children as they grow older.

Children’s colour preferences are also closely connected with gender. Little girls prefer pink, lavender, and violet. Boys like blacks and other dark colours. These colour preferences are sometimes innate and sometimes acquired. Right from childhood, knowingly or unknowingly parents or guardians accustom children to certain colours. These colours become primary choices of the children and the affinity with these colours remains throughout life.

Also, children also get enamoured by colours of their favourite toys and the other children products. The manufacturers of these kid products and toys play upon children’s feelings. Colours are a great way to affect child psychology and are ultimate option to grab children attention. These acquired preferences keep changing throughout life.

Children also form favourites in colours by virtue of the associated memories or significations attached to them. For example, the chances are great for a child to love the colour red if he loves to eat strawberry that his/her mother gets him/her.

Innate preferences in colours are inexplicable in logic and actually speak volumes about one’s personality. A child who likes dull shades and never really experiments with colours is likely to have a subdued and inexpressive personality. On the other hand, a child who is chirpy and cheery always, would go in for brighter shades in terms of preference! Mixed choices amongst shades of brighter and slightly pastel colours reflect balanced personality!

DO NOT BE AFRAID OF COLOURS

Have you ever noticed that some people are comfortable experimenting with different colours and hues while some stay far aloof from bright hues?! Some people are scared of colours and they always go in for dull shades like browns, whites and blacks etc.

Chromatophobia is the fear of colours. It is a psychological hesitation that comes with fear of making mistakes in experimentation with colours! You can go in for small dashes of colours instead of large quantities. You can accessorize your home with colourful furnishing, wall paintings, curtains, vases, cushions, pillows, sofas etc. instead of being fearful of committing faux pas with colours; you can add small amounts of colours into your home décor to balance out colours.

You can balance colour in your home by using a lot of white and tone down the vibrant colours. You can use neutral area rug, neutral glasses and vases etc. to avoid getting overwhelmed with colours.

You can test colour of your walls first by painting a small patch instead of painting the whole room and then regretting it. You can be comfortable with your colour choice for your walls and then paint your whole house. This will take away the fear of committing a mistake with colours. Adding colours in your home brings a new life and a new energy to your home. Colours uplift your mood and fill your mind with vibrant thoughts.

Do not be afraid of colours, colours are essential to feel alive. They spice up our lives and make us feel good about it. Express you personality through colours. Do not shy away and hide behind dull greys and earthy browns always. Though, earthy browns and other neutral tones are also essential to balance out the colours in your home, they shouldn’t be the only colours gracing your décor. You should bring in bright and cheerful colours and balance them with the hues of neutral shades. Balance and harmony is the key to give way to colours in to your home and to make your home look appealing and well-coordinated in colours!

COLOURS ARE RELATIVE

Colours function relatively. Colour shades and tones are something that affect and are affected by the surrounding accessories, furniture, space etc. You can bring in colour into your space by painting your walls in harmonizing and contrasting colours. Also, by incorporating colourful lamps, curtains, pillows, paintings etc. you can through in dashes of your favourite colours.

Colours make your space interesting and bright. You need to know a few basics to create a coordinated colour scheme. You need to understand the effect each colour and corner in your house has on you.

You need to experiment a little with rugs, pieces of furniture, artwork, window treatment etc. and inspire yourself to add some colours to your living space. You need to understand what base colour you’d like to have and then contrast it with the harmozing colours available in Dulux inspiration.

You need to have furniture in bold hues if you want it to be the center of your room. While if you want to take away attention from furniture pieces and draw attention to your walls and the artworks on it, you can paint the wall in an appealing colour and match the frame of the hanging with it. Lights can be experimented with in order to achieve the kind of focus that you’re aspiring for!

Do not try to use bold colours as base for your home as bold colours look nice only in pieces and dashes. If your paint your entire house in red colour, you’re bolund get sick of it in a very short time. Also, it may disturb your peace of mind to paint your home totally in dark shades. Try to contrast, compliment the shades of one colour or more to maintain harmony between the colours in your home. Try our Dulux inspiration to figure out the shade of red or blue or any colour that you may want to paint your home in! The idea is to repeat your accent and main colors around the room in large and small pieces with your art and accessories. You will be able to create a cohesive and eye-catching space that will be pleasing and have an inviting and charming look!

Attractive Features in a Home

High ceilings, floating staircases, exposed brick, and big windows are all great assets to a home. If you have a large home, it might be okay to have all of these because they would all be spread   out between the rooms.

Floating wrought iron staircases act like accessories for your home and also have utility value. They do not look imposing as you can see right through them that gives you a feeling of space. Wrought iron works well on circular staircases which are very elegant to look at but not always the most functional, especially not when it comes to moving furniture around.

High ceilings are one of the most attractive characteristics of your home. Big windows are a fabulous feature to have in a common open space of a home like in a lobby area or a living area. Big windows let in a lot of natural light and can add a very dramatic and overpowering element to a space.

Other things that have attractive value are furnishing of your house, the theme and general aura of the house. Furnishing of your house will depend upon the kind of person you are. Pillow covers, curtains, cabinets, wood work and other things add to the visual value to your house.

The décor of your house is in tandem with your taste and personality. The wall colours and kind of paint you choose also add on to the visual appeal of your house. Dulux has paints for everyone. You can opt for Magik Smooth Acrylic Finish to have a smooth and durable mall finish on the applied surfaces. Dulux Velvet Touch is a good choice to give your walls a unique glow and finish. For a rich matt finish you can choose to paint your walls with Dulux Super Smooth. There are a variety of other emulsions available at Dulux to suit different tastes.

BENEFITS OF WINDOW TINTING

Windows are important part of home décor. Just like wall colour, furniture type etc, windows can really add light, freshness and uniqueness to your house.

You can opt for window tinting to not just give a different look to your house but also for other benefits. A window tint, or solar control film, is a very thin film usually made of a polyester base with a scratch-resistant coating. These films are still only millimeters thick and are affixed to the interior side of the window with an adhesive.

Furniture colours, carpets, drapes, wall colours etc are guarded against direct heat and hence are protected against fading. Window tint also holds glass together incase your windows get broken! Excessive exposure to UV rays can have damaging effects on your family's skin. UV rays can out you at risk of skin cancer, itching, wrinkles, and dryness etc. Tinting protects against 99% of ultraviolet light.

Along with different methods for dealing with the sun like metalized film and ceramic tinting, window films also come in many shades and colours, ranging from opaque to clear. There are tints available in metallic look, such as bronze, stainless steel or gray.

Window tinting was earlier very popular for cars and work places. However, nowadays people choose tinted windows for their homes as well. Apart from no hindrance in normal functions of windows, tints add on the positive effects. Tints have scientific benefits for skin protection etc and they also help you have privacy at home!
